Monells

The first note goes back to 889/890 AD when King Eudes (Odo of France) gave to Wicfried Villa Mulinnensis – village of mills, later developed into Monells.

The village was built inside the walls of castle Castillo Bizconde de Bas, firstly mentioned in 1.102 AD of which only part of walls and towers are left. Both remains of Romanesque style.

Houses preserved until now were built a bit later in excellent Gothic with impressive system of arches and other Gothic elements like windows and decorations. The outstanding piece is for sure horseshoe arched balcony on main square.

The whole system of construction of houses has stayed untouched till now, so it´s excellent example of Medieval Organic Architecture.
