Monastrell

Grape Monastrell Spain
The 4th most planted red variety in Spain with area of 34.501 ha (2023). Known as “Mataro, Mourvédre”.

Description: Conical bunch, Requiring hot sun/sufficient humidity, Often irrigated, Lower resistance to diseases & dry winds from inland, Often planted on southern slopes of hills, Red and Rosé production.

Profile: Full-bodied, High tannins, Medium acidity, High alcohol content.

Aromas: Tobacco, Blackberries, Cocoa, Spicy touch of Black Pepper.

Main Regions: Levant in Spain – the most representative grape of Valencian Community (D.O. Alicante), Murcia (D.O. Yecla, D.O. Jumilla, D.O. Bullas). Hugely used in D.O. Almansa in Castilla-La Mancha.

Other Regions: D.O. Carinena, D.O. Penedés, D.O. Cataluna, D.O. Carinena, D.O. Binissalem. Outside the Spain can be traced in southern France (Languedoc-Roussillón) under the Mourvédre name while is U.S.A. is cultivated primarily in Washington and California.

Blending: Blended mostly with Garnacha but even with Syrah, Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon.
