Mencía

Originally from western part of Spain, cultivated since Roman times. Covers around 8.280 ha (2023). Known as “Jaen” in Portugal.

Description: Small bunch of grapes, Blue-black, Very compact one, Low resistance to chilly days in autumn, Buds early and grows fast, Harvested at the beginning of October.

Profile: Medium-full bodied, Moderate tannins, Medium-High acidity, Higher alcohol content.

Aromas: Cherry, Berries, Licorice, Plum.

Main Regions: D.O. Bierzo (Castilla León) believed to be native there. Very common in Galicia (D.O. Ribeira Sacra, D.O. Valdeorras, D.O. Monterrey).

Other Regions: Recommended and authorized in Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha.

In Portugal is cultivated in Dao Region under the name of Jaen.

Blending: Mostly produced monovarietal wines, occasionally blended with Garnacha, Tempranillo or Cabernet Sauvignon.

Suggestions:
