ALCAZABA Castle.

Málaga, the 2nd oldest city in Spain was founded by Phoenicians of Tyre while they have been sailing along the Mediterranean and trading with local tribes. They founded colony called Malaka aiming to start production of different goods.

Salazón – antique style of preservation of fishes, mostly tuna fish in small pools. Fish was cut in slices, dried on sun and fermented by adding salt. Later it was stored in amphora for transport and negotiation. Traces of these pools are actually in rectory of University of Málaga or in front of Roman Theater.

Garum – probably spicy sauce, sub-product o Salazón, when the rests of fishes, intestines, blood and other tiny fishes were exposed on sun for long time before being served. Become extremely famous during Roman Empire.

Royal Purple – colorant produced and widely used by Phoenician to differ royal cast. Málaga shoreline was at that time rich in Murex Brandaris – a shell producing purple color.

Shortly before Málaga became part of Roman Empire, the city was dominated by Carthaginians. During the Romans the city – at that time called Malaca – had been gaining important role and in the 1st century AD the law Lex Flavia Malacitana designated city as a municipality within Roman Empire. At that time the Roman Theater or Public Bath were built.

Roman decadency opened space for Germanic tribes and later for Visigoths before the Muslims entered Peninsula.

Middle Age was again the time of splendor. The city called Malaqa was growing and the trade caused its richness as different merchants, Jewish, Moorish or other from around the Mediterranean had been trading goods. From this epoch Alcazaba or castle Gibralfaro are left.

The Reconquest of Málaga belongs between the longest in Spain taking any six month of hard besiege in 1.487 AD.

During the Modern Era Málaga was growing although times were unstable, a masterpiece of that epoch is Cathedral of Málaga, built by architect Diego de Siloé. In the 19th century the city was one of the pioneers undergoing the Industrial Revolution followed at the end of century by huge crisis. The main cause were close of Blast Furnace and Phylloxera, the pest attacking roots of grapevines.

Economically the city starts rising during the Francoism when the tourism caused population boom and more stable situation which continues until now.

  • Carnival of Málaga (February)
  • Day of Andalucía (February the 28th)
  • Semana Santa (Eastern) – the most important religious fest celebrating passion, death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Last the whole week while all brotherhoods make processions through Málaga streets showing their spectacular Thrones.
  • Cinema Festival of Málaga (March) – big event dedicated to Spanish cinematography and recent production.
  • Feria de Málaga (August) – 9 days of huge celebration to commemorate Reconquest of the city by Catholic Kings of Spain in 1.487 AD. No words to describe it.

  • Tierra Santa – another excellent life experience of grilled meat in charming place outside Málaga.
  • Venta Carlos del Mirador – traditional restaurant called Venta – Ventorro – Ventorillo is located out of city mostly on merchants routes, later along roads to support travelers. This one, located on the road A-7000 to Colmenar offers typical meat of Málaga Mountains.
  • Restaurant El Cabra – lovely place located on eastern part of city called Pedregalejo. Busy place with spectacular traditional cuisine directly on the shoreline.
  • El Tintero – stunning restaurant in El Palo quarter where all dishes are sold through impressive auction. Easily accessible by bike along the promenade, opened every day.
  • Venta El Túnel – lovely restaurant on the old road MA-3101 to Casabermeja is another jewel of traditional gastronomy of Málaga.
