Consuegra

The most famous and outstanding pieces are probably old-fashioned wind mills atop of hill playing role in a Battle with Windmills exceptionally described by Cervantes in a story of ingenious nobleman Don Quixote de La Mancha.

The general history is going back to 6th BC when the Carpetani tribes part of The Celts were inhabiting central plateau of Spain before the Romans conquered territory.

Romans settled site after the Punic Wars for long time following own system of architecture and building aqueduct, damn, main square Forum Romanum, apart the town laid on merchant way “Vía Laminium”.

Romans together with Goths stayed until the Moorish domination during the Middle Age. At that time battles, reconquest and unrest was predominant for a long period. It was the time when castle Castillo de Muela was erected.

  • Plaza de España (Square of Spain) – typical Castilian square originally Roman main square
  • Los Corredores – typical Castilian house, formerly dedicated to commercialize wheat
  • Iglesia de San Juan Bautista (St. Joan Bautista Church) – Mudéjar style from 16th century
  • Iglesia de Sta. María La Mayor (Church of St. Mary Major) – built in 17th century in Toledo-Mudéjar style
  • Roman Damn – dating 1st century and located off the town
  • Alfar – old workshop of pottery of Consuegra with Roman and Arab pieces used to create products

  • Fiesta de San Antón (January) – blessing of animals
  • Carnival (February) – a classic celebration of gluttony before the period of lent starts
  • Semana Santa – Eastern (March) – celebration of entrance, death and Resurrection of Jesus
  • Consuegra Medieval – Medieval Consuegra (August) – return to the 11th century to commemorate the battle between Castilian and Almoravid warriors when Diego Rodríguez, son of El Cid died
  • Rosa del Azafrán – Rose of Saffron (October) – at the moment of saffron harvest, the aim is promotion of the La Mancha gastronomy
