Balearics Wine Region

Balearics are famous for being a great tourist destination with four stunning islands: Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera. The wine production there is also well-known.

The history of wine-making dates back to the time when grapes were brought and cultivated by the Romans. Although wine making was affected by the Phylloxera pest, today Mallorca produces excellent wine.

The vineyards around Balearic Islands were covering any 2.968 hectares in 2022.

The Mediterranean climate brings excellent conditions for growing grapes because of hot and dry summers with temperatures around 30 degrees. The Sierra de Tramuntana hills protect the area from cold winds and frost especially in the winter.

The first mention of wine-making goes back to 121 B.C. Later, after date Pliny The Elder recognized the excellent quality of wine produced around the island. Even during the Muslim govern, grape cultivation continued until the reconquest.

A major achievement occurred when the Phylloxera pest arrived in France, but later almost destroyed local wine production.

D.O. Binissalem

Binissalem is located in the northern part of the isle of Mallorca, under the natural protection of the Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range, northeast of the capital, La Palma. Covers any 614 ha of vineyards.

The history of Binissalem wine production goes back to Roman Times and has been well recognized since then, continuing through Muslim domination and after the Reconquest.

The Mediterranean climate brings hot and dry summers with chilly winters above zero degrees. Any 550 mm of irregular precipitation occurs mainly during the winter. Altitude oscillate between 70 – 140 m.a.s.

Authorized Grape Variety:

WHITE: Prensal Blanca, Parellada, Macabeo, Moscatel de Alejandría, Moscatel de Grano Menudo, Moscatel, Giró Ros.

RED: Manto Negro, Callet, Tempranillo, Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Gorgollassa.

D.O. Pla i Llevant

The Pla i Llevant region is located in the central and eastern part of Mallorca, around cities such as Felanitx, Llucmajor, Manacor, Maria de la Salut, and Artá. In total, it covers an area of 439 hectares.

The terrain is flat under 100 meters above sea level. It has fertile soil made of clay and limestone. The color is white or slightly red because of iron oxidation.

The climate is typical Mediterranean, mild winters with occasional strong wind, frost or fog and long hot summers. There’s around 450 mm of rain yearly, mostly in fall and spring. The EMBATS is a fresh sea breeze that helps balance the temperature.

WHITE: Chardonnay, Macabeo, Moscatel de Grano Menudo, Moscatel de Alejandría, Parellada, Prensal, Riesling, Giró Ros, Viognier.

RED: Cabernet Sauvignon, Callet, Fogoneu, Manto Negro, Merlot, Monastrell, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Tempranillo.
